Hypertext, description

ASAP incorporates hypertext, a technique which connects pieces of text in a non-linear fashion. Hypertext allows the developer to link a term or a phrase to its definition or to other clarifying information, so that the additional information is hidden from view when the term is on the screen the user, at his/her option, can bring the additional information onto the screen. A term can be linked to a descriptive graphic, as well as to text. The additional information can be similarly linked to more information, and so on. ASAP incorporates all of these techniques, resulting in a user interface which each user, in effect, tailors to his/her own capabilities during each session. That is, each user has a potentially different background and level of experience, and will know the definitions of some terms and not others. Hypertext provides an opportunity for a user to look up a definition without breaking away from the system. [Pg.148]

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is a document description language that was designed to create formatted, structured documents using hypertext technique (where links are associated to content pieces of the document so that these links can be easily applied as references to other related documents). [Pg.245]

An important aspect of HTML is that it is readable by humans as well as machines. Given an HTML document, a human reader can make reasonable sense of it. A computer can take the same source and display it in a way suited to whatever output device is available. The outcome of this requirement was that HTML is based on plain text. A mechanism for describing the structure of plain text documents already existed in the ISO standard (ISO standard 8879 1986) for SGML. SGML was widely accepted by the Hypertext research community as an appropriate platform for the description of hyperlinked documents. [Pg.346]

The origin attribute of a Paragraph is used to provide information regarding where the idea of the Paragraph originated, and it can be a combination of textual descriptions, files, hypertext links, and other Paragraphs. The Link type implements the concept of the origin attribute, and the attributes associated with the Link type are ... [Pg.158]

The experimental text used by Schnotz (1982, 1984) served as learning material. The experimental text contains the description of two types of psychotherapy psychoanalysis and behaviour therapy. Each type of therapy had five sections. The length of the text was 1079 words. Additionally, each of the 10 sections had a corresponding subheading. The experimental text was presented in different ways as hypertext or as simultaneous graphical presentation. [Pg.72]

Can hypertext type techniques make easier the characteristic description of tasks and their chainings, according to the principle presented in Fig. 3, and this in order to help the ergonomist make these computerized census and description ... [Pg.234]

According to the same principle, each task can be associated to a node Informational needs list , called jNi, in direct binding with other nodes, describing each variable of the process (Fig. 4). Furthermore, by associating an AI module, that integrates a base of description coherence rules to the hypertext database, it can be possible to improve this descriptive step, by extracting redundance, imprecision or inadequacy. [Pg.234]

The first method is to develop a cognitive or semantic map of the expert s knowledge using quantitative methods. This method requires the expert to complete word associations of all of die related concepts in the content domain. The intercorrelations are multi-dimensionally scaled to generate a structural map (see Jonassen, [7] for a description of this technique). This structural map would then be used as a graphical browser or concept map for accessing information in the hypertext. [Pg.126]
