ELBI effect on the morphology of erythrocytes was studied in seven rabbits. ELBI was performed by introducing the waveguide into the lumen of the femoral vein under ether anesthesia. He-Ne laser LG-75 (HNL), Russia, and nitrogen ultraviolet laser LGI-21 (UVL) were used. The power of radiation at the end of waveguide was 2.5 mW, and irradiation was applied for one hour. [Pg.308]

HNL irradiation of blood did not cause any changes in volume of aU above mentioned forms of erythrocytes. The same results have been obtained after the irradiation of blood with UVL (Figs. 30.3e,f). Thus LILI of blood resulted in better conservation of erythrocytes in vitro. [Pg.312]

Since the synthetic effort required to prepare the lipid is generally greater for MVLs than for UVLs, with a view towards applications it is prudent to compare the overall performance of UVLs and MVLs, in particular considering the results shown in Sect. 2. Our work shows that while optimized formulations of MVLs and UVLs perform similarly in some cases, there are two important applications in which MVLs are far superior. [Pg.217]

As we have elaborated in Sects. 2 and 4.3, the TE of lamellar DNA complexes of MVLs and UVLs shows universal behavior when plotted against the membrane charge density, implying that optimized complexes of MVLs and UVLs transfect equally well. Importantly, the fact that the universal curve is bell-shaped (where TE is plotted logarithmically) implies that optimization of the lipid composition is crucial for objectively comparing lipid performance. Interestingly, while complexes in the H c and HnC phase do not follow this universal curve, their TE no more than equals that of optimized lamellar complexes. [Pg.217]

A 24-h culture of transformed E. coli (LB/amp broth 37°C, 100 rpm) was transferred onto the surface of LB/amp/IPTG agar and incubated at 37°C for 24 h. Isolated green fluorescent colonies (illuminated with a handheld long UV lamp, 360-395 nm Model UVL 4 UVP, Upland, CA) were picked and transferred to 25 mL of LB/amp broth in 250-mL Erlenm-eyer flasks (starter cultures). The starter cultures were incubated at 37°C and 100 rpm) until a cell density of 0.0054-0.026 absorbance units (104-10s CFU/mL) was obtained as measured by OD660 with a spectrophotometer (Beckman DU-600 Beckman Coulter, Fullerton, CA). In the upper layer of the sea subjected to photosynthesis the concentration of nitrate varies from 4 to 6. iM in winter to less than 1 pM in summer. Concentrations of nitrite in this layer are very low (less than 0.1 uVl). The whole basin mean content of ammonia in the upper mixed layer is close to 0.2. iM in summer, and to 0.4. iM in winter [23]. [Pg.287]

Determining the structure of an organic compound wait a difHcult and time-consuming process in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but OKtraordiiiary advances have been made in tl e past few decades. Powerful techniques arc now available that greatly simplify the problem of structure detemnination. In this and the next two chapters well look at four of the most useful techniques -mass spectrometry (MS , infrared spectroscopy ilR>, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ultraviolet spectroscopy UVl and we ll see the kind of information that can be obtained from each. [Pg.461]

A set of four pure-component ultraviolet-visible spectra, each containing 76 data points, was taken firom reference 18 representing a K-matrix calibration situation and is referred to as the UVl data set (see Figure 2). Stone has applied TSH theory to the study of nido and arachno borane clusters, deriving the (n + 2) and (n + 3) SEP counts for these species145c). For instance, the nido clusters were found to possess a degenerate non-bonding pair of orbitals which are parity related (UVL"). The non-bonding nature of these orbitals may be rationalised in terms of the Parity Inversion Operator. This operator reverses the bonding characteristics of L ... [Pg.66]
